Providing Educational Opportunities

Creating a brighter Future

Education
Quality education is a scare commodity in Malawi. Although primary education is free to Malawians, less than 40% of all children complete a primary education and less than 14% complete secondary school. Of those who complete secondary school, only a small percentage has access to either public or private post-secondary education or training opportunities.

Pothawira believes basic quality education is a fundamental right and necessity for the empowerment of individuals to reach their full potential. As a result, it has adopted a comprehensive plan to help “change a nation through education.” It will prepare children to learn with a focus on literacy and numeracy, provide enhanced instruction through innovation and technology, and promote lifelong vocational development. Its goal is that every child complete secondary school with the basic skills to either continue their education or move into a productive work environment.

Pothawira Academy
Pothawira operates a pre-primary nursery program and a primary (standards 1-8) school. It also has constructed a Learning Center that provides supplemental instruction and enhanced learning through technology. Pothawira is in the process of constructing a high school.

Providing Orphan Care

Empowering Students to Create Change

Orphan Care
Pothawira Malawi currently operates an orphan program that supports 120 children ages birth to 18. The children live in “duplexes” of 10 children under the care and support of a live in “momma.” Most of the mommas are widows who were selected from churches over which Peter Maseko has responsibility.

Providing Healthcare Access to our Communities

Positive Change for All

Outpatient Clinic
The outpatient clinic opened in 2012 and has developed a reputation as one of the best clinics in east central Malawi. It is not uncommon for patients to travel to Pothawira from surrounding districts to receive treatment. The clinic sees between 150-300 patients a day depending on the time of year. Over 50% of the patients are children. Malaria is a major problem in Malawi and represents most of the cases during the rainy season.

Birthing Center
Pothawira Malawi has completed construction on a maternity ward with over 20 beds. The birthing center will be a model for obstetrical and neonatal services in the region. To support this operation, Pothawira Malawi has constructed a Women’s Shelter so patients and families can stay on property prior to and during the labor process. As with the clinic, patients will pay a fee for services at the birthing center.

Surgery Center
Pothawira will break ground in the fall of 2023 to add a surgical center so it can perform C-section deliveries as well as other general surgical operations. It is anticipated that teams of doctors from around the world will come to Pothawira on a regular basis to support the surgical operations.
